The Tacoma Series grew from my Banded Vessels, and builds upon the celebration of color from my Trophy Series while emulating their spirit of abundance. Generally, I treat my flowers as impressionistic. I believe if the focus is perfection, one runs the risk of creating artifice rather than life. I say this not as an excuse, but as an aesthetic decision. I felt strongly about this until I had the good fortune to tour the Tacoma Metro-parks Trial Dahlia Garden. The reality of the globular symmetry of these flowers is, in itself, quintessentially artificial. It has been an interesting exercise for me to emulate these flowers. Every series has a particular challenge that keeps me equally engaged and exasperated. The Tacoma series challenges me to balance the improbable artificiality of these wonderful flowers with my desire to impressionistically interpret them.
